Review of Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) by Jacob B — 07 Oct 2017
We had twenty years to prepare. So did they. I'm not quoting the film's tagline, I'm pointing out that audiences were anticipating Independence Day 2 for years and Roland Emmerich had 20 years to make a good sequel.
Packed with great visuals and big, epic sci-fi battles yet lacking compelling characters, a well-written script or even a great speech like with the first film, Independence Day: Resurgence is nothing more than just the first film with updated special effects, no Will Smith and a talking sphere.
I kid you not, there is a talking sphere in this movie. Some scenes are pretty much just the same from the first film. There's a Chinese character who's clearly only there in a crappy attempt to say "Diversity!" And we see a couple of kids driving a car in their first scene although we've never seen them before and given no proper introduction.
And Thor's ACTUAL brother failed to make me root for him. Jeff Goldblum even has an outstandingly bad scream in one scene. Has Roland Emmerich's reputation really come down to this? If you've watched the first film, you'll probably - actually, no, DEFINITELY - have déjà vu upon seeing this movie.
