Review of Independence Day (1996) by Luis G — 19 Jul 2012
This is one of those monumental movies that become more of an event than just a film experience. It expanded my belief in the extraterrestrial and became the center of discussion on numerous occasions.
Perhaps surprisingly, the tactics used in the film-making are echoes of those used in sci-fi films of the mid-twentieth century, and they are quite effective. You can see the inspiration derived not from just those movies, but also it's evident that the techniques pioneered during the original "Star Wars" era are referenced, and they work quite well, even for a film of this size and modernity.
"Independence Day" is a spectacle, an awesome journey filled with amazing and jaw-dropping destruction, grandeur, camaraderie, and thrills. Just about each character has ample and equal time to shine, the performances are believable, and I love how the plot is an extension of what has already been established to be alien lore.
It may not be the most plausible rendition of an other-worldly invasion, but this movie took things to a whole other level, and raised the bar for what blockbusters could be.
