Almost the prototypical example of summer blockbuster entertainment, Independence Day ticks all the boxes both good and bad: great special effects, formulaic plot, trite dialogue and borderline irritating characters - but it does so without taking itself too seriously, managing to be both fun and exciting, and in that sense is exactly what a movie of this type should be.
