Review of Independence Day (1996) by David M — 18 Jun 2016
"We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive!".
Early(ish) Roland Emmerich film, that's like having "USA! USA!" shouted in your face for 2+ hours, and that borrows liberally from HG Wells classic 'The War of the Worlds'. Also has one of the most Jingoistic speeches I can ever remember seeing - partly reproduced above - (delivered by Bill Pullman, who plays the President), and I'm *still* not entirely sure why the alien invaders all seem to use Apple Macs.
For all that, though, I still quite enjoy this film (mainly for the explosions!), 20 years after it was first released.
