Review of Incident at Loch Ness (2004) by Chad T — 18 Apr 2008
I'm very thankful for Jeff Shannon's synopsis of this film on the Flixter page, because otherwise it would be impossible to describe. In a way it's like a mixture of (a.) the "documentary of a botched film" subgenre of Man of La Mancha, (b.
) the "satirical mockumentary" subgenre of This is Spinal Tap, and (c.) the "mockumentary about reality and illusion" subgenre of F for Fake--which is in turn futher inspired by (d.
) the "behind the scenes" documentaries of Werner Herzog's filmmaking misadventures (Burden of Dreams, My Best Fiend). Even if one finds Zak Penn's self-parody a bit tiresome here and there, there's still some real fun here in watching Herzog himself play along--both in the film itself as well as on the commentary track.
Herzog fans should certainly check it out, because they're most likely to appreciate all of the humor.
