Review of Inch'Allah dimanche (2001) by Henrietta S — 17 Feb 2009
I sympathised with the main character Zouina's plight as an immigrant woman, trying to adjust to life in a foreign land with three young children, an abusive husband, a stereotypically wicked mother-in-law, limited knowledge of the French language & no income (besides the 10 francs she gets to buy the weekly groceries from the shop down the street). in the end, she's able to overcome some of those barriers (such as learning French from listening to a popular game show on the radio) & stand up for herself.
Although the ending isn't definitive, I got a sense that Zouina will be more independent, when she declares she will be taking the kids to school the next day. she isn't asking her husband for permission, she's merely stating a fact!
