Review of Incendies (2010) by Raja N — 04 Jun 2011
Since it has been nominated for best foreign work in 2010, I expected it to be a very good film. Even though I watched it with that in mind, I was still shocked and amazed by its filmmaking beauty. The two stories are captivating : the reality of what happened to Azabal's character, relating to the past ; and the quest to find the truth, relating to the present. The balance was done so well you couldn't help but be more intrigued by both of the stories. Director Villeneuve decided to present it as chapters, a little bit in the Tarantino Vein, which proved to be very effective.
The film, however, is not for the feint hearted persons. It's daring and isn't afraid, for example to show the instant aftermath of a birth operation done at home, or the shooting of a 4 year old girl running to see her mother.
The final revelation/truth is definitely shocking, and the scene that links the twins near the end of the movie (1+1=2 ??) is sensational and nearly sums up everything.
Even though this could be disturbing for the majority of normal people, this definitely shouldn't be missed. Way to go Canada :).
