Review of Incendies (2010) by Jane N — 25 Jun 2011
Horrifically dark and profound, Denis Villeneuve's complex, generation spanning study of a family slowly unravelled by the consequences of Middle Eastern conflicts is surely this year's first indisputable masterpiece.
Breathtakingly photographed, unforgettably harrowing, Villeneuve's brilliantly directed, sombre study builds steadily towards an astonishing finale which combines a grim referential antithesis to Sophocles infamous tragedy, Oedipus The King, with a sour condemnation of Middle Eastern violence and a subversive consideration of that familiar, age old message, sadly always relevant, of "Blood begets blood.".
Superb, highly recommended.
