Review of Incendies (2010) by Bob L — 30 Jun 2011
A great story of a set of twins in Canada who are handed envelopes at the reading of their mothers will to go on a mission to discover their brother and father in the Middle East. The journey opens up tales of the mothers past in the Lebanon to explain who she was, why she seemed crazy, and the shocking truths of the twins origin.
Some scenes drag a little, but is more than made up for by the moving acting talents and depiction of brutality in war. The violence, graphic but far from glorifying, actually make you question the reasoning (or mindlessness) on how and why people 'take sides' in conflict.
This is the background to the familial drama that plays out with some gut wrenching revelations. Add to this a fantastic soundtrack which also uses Thom Yorkes (Radiohead) haunting voice to underline some stunning shots, this is powerful stuff.
