Review of Incendies (2010) by Tor M — 14 Sep 2011
A well produced flick with that slow pace that you often see in longer movies. I recently saw another film by Villeneuve and I liked it a lot. Therefor I was naturally curious about this one and an Oscar nomination is never an excitement killer.
I like the story and the characters. It's quite challenging to hang on to it. Not because it's fast moving, but the mother and daughter characters seem so alike that it was difficult for me to get it. The story is told and parted into different cities and timelines with chapter-like texts appearing on screen. The mothers story, and (mostly) the daughter following her mothers footsteps is therefor an easy mix-up to begin with.
I feel a bit disappointed, even if this is a really good movie. There are pieces that are put togheter brilliantly, and especially the climax and the "twist" awakes emotions and understandment on a high level. Still it was a bit to slow, and it didn't get a total hold of me. It certainly won't be forgotten for a long while though.
Pretty film, that demands a lot of time from the viewer before you really get it.
