Review of Incendies (2010) by Daniel P — 01 Mar 2012
Moving (melo)drama concerning a dying mother's wish for a history of violence to be broken that sends her twins on a quest to find the father they thought dead and the brother they never knew they had.
Expertly structured and character driven (despite some contrivances that rely too heavily on coincidence, particularly in the denouement), Incendies looks epic but concerns itself less with the brutality of a (fictionalised but recognisible) war but more with the effects it has on one person.
Strong performances throughout in a deliberately paced and deeply affecting film.
