Review of Incarnate (2016) by The N — 23 Dec 2016
Never heard of Incarnate? Of course not - it's another under-the-radar Blumhouse special without any marketing campaign, starring a random Hollywood actor (Aaron Eckhart) who's seemingly thrown to the proverbial low-budget production wolves. Director Brad Peyton may have wrapped up his film in the trappings of demonic possession, but inside that packaging is a watered-down "Inception" laced with a mild horror aftertaste. Incarnate, much like its central character at key moments, barely seems to have a pulse. It's all a wild jumble of half-baked, derivative ideas and arbitrary rules, all of which add up to a suspense-free horror narrative as murky as its lighting. Issues of continuity and logic pale in comparison to how the film forces Eckhart to act. It's rare that we see someone as talented as Eckhart be relegated to work this shoddy and dispiriting. Although the screenplay by Ronnie Christensen steals material from any number of sources, the most obvious inspiration for "Incarnate" is, of course, the "Exorcist" films. Incoherent mashup of previous demonized tyke films and unfailingly inept pseudo-science and the result is about as devoid of suspense, much less genuine horror, as this specific sub-genre can be. "Incarnate" is a tedious dud whose lack of gore and thrills will certainly doom it with the genre crowd.
VERDICT: "Hit The Exits" - [Panned Reaction] These are some of the worst films ever made. These films do everything wrong and do it worse than bad. Audiences should never see this film under any circumstances! (Films that are rated 0.5 or 1 stars).
