Review of In Which We Serve (1942) by James-Masaki R — 12 Aug 2012
A propaganda piece by the British during WWII, directed by David Lean and Noel Coward. For such a large piece of work, it's amazing that for these 2, it was for both their first time to direct anything in film.
Pretty big risk being taken by the Brits to finance and support something so ambitious, recalling what RKO did with Orson Welles a year prior. It's still a magnificent film in its own right, not just about the war and fighting the enemy, but more about the individuals involved and their personal and naval lives intertwining to both bitter ends and happiness.
Sadly, Coward never directed another film after this, but Lean of course went on to a bigger and more epic career.
