Review of In Time (2011) by Valerie P — 25 Oct 2013
I am truly shocked by the poor reviews for this one. I have often made it clear that I am not a Justin Timberlake fan. I once called him "lamb head" when his hair was poofy. After the cut, he was "lamb head the shorn". However, I have to give him his dues when they are deserved.
I love a good sci-fi. I think that writer/director Andrew Nicol has come up with an amazing idea here, and I have thought about it often since viewing the film. The premise feels familar enough to draw us in; a little bit of "Logan's Run", a little bit of "Hunger Games". Yet this whole concept of "time as currency", literally leaving you dead when your clock runs out, it's so unique it's genius.
Once you wrap your head around the film's main concept, then you're along for the chase, as Timberlake's character and his new lady love practically incite a revolution by breaking some unwritten codes. Basically, if you're from the slums, you're not supposed to land yourself a big stash of "time" on your lifeline. The game is rigged to maintain a certain social order. This is where the story makes its statement, and I believe that it's a very relevant one.
So, well done Justin and well done, Nicol. I think that those less than kind reviewers simply wanted an action film without the taxation of working their brains. I go for quite the opposite, thank you!
