Review of In Time (2011) by Mgamer490 — 09 Jan 2022
My partner recommended this movie to me after we had a random discussion about what it would be like to have a timer on your life that you could visually see, knowing when you die but not knowing how it would occur. She had seen this movie before but seemed very keen to get me on board. I wasn't disappointed.
The core idea of this movie is really interesting. Everybody has a timer on their wrist which tracks the remainder of their lives, which begins once they reach the age of 25, I believe they are given 1 year from the outset. Society itself is completely dependent on time, it is used as currency so paying bills, you pay with the time you have, crossing to other districts "please deposit 1 month". The focus is on the more rural districts that have to live day to day, trying to earn what they can to earn time for themselves and their families, people die often just around the street and struggle to make ends meet, while you have the rich and powerful who essentially can live forever and depend on the poor dying to increase their own lifespan.
We follow Will (Justin Timberlake) who is from the poor districts, he is given an opportunity by being provided up to a century of life span, and due to certain circumstances that occur in the movie, he decides to try and do some good with it. He is later joined by Sylvia (Amanda Seyfried) who is always a joy to see on the screen. The acting itself isn't anything special but I had no issues and the chemistry between Amanda and Justin is good.
As I said before, the idea for this movie is great and though I may have not explained the synopsis incredibly well, it is worth a watch in my view. My biggest gripe is that I feel the story could've had more done with it, pretty much from the outset, it was fairly predictable to see what was going to be the focus and it never really changed, but with a cool idea like this it really could've gone into an entirely different direction or an even bigger one.
Despite all that, I had a good time watching it, it is an easy movie to just sit back and enjoy, probably will only be watched once but that is all you need really.
