Review of In the Valley of Elah (2007) by Matt F — 08 Nov 2008
Probably the best and most touching 'anti-war' film you'll ever get to see. Without commentary, without a tangible direct opinion of either writer, director or director of photography, you're plunged into the middle of a reality you don't really want to face and in the end are left with your own thesis' about the plot that seemed so obvious and now stale (ie: was Mike an informant for a newspaper? Did he steal the meth from Ortiz etc.
) This is no ensemble cast for huge emotional outbreaks or theatrics and the soberness of the photography is almost soothing considering some harsh realities that are dealt with in this film. I cannot understand why TLJ did not get the Oscar for this performance.
He is simply divine and so impressive. Therone looks like someone different and thus unused and it adds so much believability. An absolute must see. Without any doubt one of the best films of 2007.
