Review of In the Valley of Elah (2007) by Philip S — 24 Aug 2014
The film gets a thumbs up based mainly on the strong performances by Jones, Theron and Sarandon who, while showing little range, still manage great depth. The "mystery" aspect of the story is a bit of a failure, though, and the great reveal is a let down to be sure.
The overall message is powerful but could have been approached in much more effective ways. In the end, the film doesn't seem to know if it wants to be whodunnit or social/political message and the two sides end up muddled and unsatisfying.
Still, the film is watchable thanks to the mesmerizing talents involved.
