Review of In the Valley of Elah (2007) by Anthony C — 26 Apr 2010
Hank Deerfield(Tommy Lee Jones)is given the message that his son,a soldier, has died, while being stationed in the U.S.The details are sketchy, and Hank decides to investigate what has happened...
There are harsh truths to be had.Things no parents wants to be true, and no military unit wants to disclose about their own troops. With the war in Iraq as a backdrop, this movie is a strong indictment of war itself, and the loss of innocence that always happens with those who part take in it.
Strong performances from especially Lee Jones, and Susan Sarandon(Hanks wife Joan), and a realistic and compelling material makes for a quality movie. The film is also well directed by Paul Haggis, who knows exactly what he wants from his actors, and how the movie should look and feel. The story is also based on truth, and the director doesn't try to hide his intentions here,so I don't think you can accuse it of being cynical and calculated.
