Review of In the Valley of Elah (2007) by Michael C — 26 Oct 2011
Gripping, timely and with a compelling theme, In the Valley of Elah strikes at the heart of the American culture of death, war and empty patriotism. The concept of the film catapults the audience through all of the most profound emotions.
A US soldier returns from Iraq to the great relief of his parents only to go missing. With the determination of John Wayne in the Searchers, a father, portrayed brilliantly by Tommy Lee Jones, undertakes a personal odyssey to search for his missing son.
The outcome thrusts the audience and Jones' character to the depths of despair revealing the shambolic reality of the US military and its most tragic undertaking to date, the War in Iraq. The audience is transformed along with the characters in a sweeping reintegration of recent American history.
