Review of In the Name of the Father (1993) by Marcus W — 12 Feb 2010
In this true story of innocent people sent to jail for a crime they didn't commit, much like Shawshank the film is bolstered by three very strong performances: Day-Lewis is a young man in the wrong place and of the wrong nationality at the wrong time. He starts off as a carefree lad, accepting the hand he's been dealt only to mature with a fierce intensity while in prison. And Emma Thompson gives outstanding support as his lawyer, determined to prove his innocence. But, it's Postlethwaite who steals the film as a mild-mannered father struggling to cope with the pressures that are suddenly forced upon his entire family. The film concludes with a gripping court-room showdown - where Thompson really comes into her own.
This film may not be as good as Shawshank, but it can proudly stand nearby.
