A powerful, searing true life drama which is brilliatly directed by Jim Sheridan, concerning Gerry Canlon, played intensely by Daniel Day-Lewis in a powerhouse Oscar nominated performance who is a petty theif in the strife-torn Belfast of the '70s, Gerry who is innocent is wrongly convicted of taking part in IRA bombing that killed five people in Guildford England in 1974, after a brutal interrogation by the British police, he is forced to confess and sign a false statement to the the deadly terrorist bombing, he is sentenced to life and the later his father Giuseppe, played superbly by the late great character actor Pete Postlethwaite in a compelling Oscar nominated performance is charge with being an accomplice and also sent to prison.
Gerry and Guiseppe bond in prison as he sees his father's health declining, he learns of his father's inner strength and wisdom. Emma Thompson delivers a riveting Oscar nominated turn as the fiercely dedicated lawyer who is determine to prove his innocence and clear his good father's name.
