Review of In the Name of the Father (1993) by Marty D — 04 Feb 2012
As far as miscarriages of justice go, this case had to be among the worst. This isn't just ONE innocent man that went to prison and lost 10+ years of his life. This is 11 people that had to pay for a crime they clearly did not commit due to a crappy trial and crappy investigation work.
Yet at the same time, the people in charge of this investigation have NEVER seen a day in jail for what they did. Even though there's proof that they DID fuck up this investigation. Life just isn't fair sometimes.
Anyway this movie is excellent, even if it isn't exactly the most historically accurate film. The rebuilding of the relationship between Gerard and his father, while completely false, made for a good story and ultimately when the so called accomplices to this bombing were vindicated, it was an incredibly satisfying feeling.
Daniel Day Lewis, as should be no surprise, was tremendous in his role but since the story is a strong one he doesn't need to carry the movie entirely on his shoulders. Just an excellent movie about how a justice system can completely fuck someone's life just because they want to quickly solve a case.
