Review of In the Name of the Father (1993) by Gemini F — 16 Apr 2010
A true story about the Conlon's,a father and son wrongly accused and convicted for an IRA terrorist bombing, in England during the 70's. It really shows how far the british police and court system was willing to go in their war on terror.stooping to torture to get their false confessions.
The father Guiseppe(Pete Postletwhaite)and the son Gerry(Daniel Day-Lewis), whose previous relationship has been quite rocky,is now put to the ultimate test,as they have to live together in a small room, with Gerry's anger threatening to tear it all apart. With all hope gone, Gerry quicly turn to drugs and rioting, while the father continues to write letters to their new attorney (Emma Thompson),trying to get a new trial for them to prove their innocence. As Guiseppes health worsens, and Gerry must take responsibility for his care, they slowly but steadily reconcile their differences.Gerry now takes up his fathers battle and fights for justice for them both.
The interplay between Day-Lewis and Postlethwaite is some of the best acting I've ever seen. I think they both deserved an Oscar for their performance. This movie is a must-see!!
