Movie perfection with Christopher Doyle adding his genius cinematics - add the violin theme and you've got achingly beautiful cinema.

You'd have to be utterly soulless to be left feeling "empty" as some reviewers have said.

The slow pace, long periods without dialogue and recurring musical themes only serve to heighten the sense of burning passion between the protagonists. A love that cannot be acted on or expressed for fear of scandal.

Fantastically subtle performances, beautifully shot, a soundtrack to die for, plus Cheung's fabulous wardrobe, make this a faultless piece of cinema.

If you're coming to this following 2046, expect more subtlety and a more thoughtful movie.
