Review of In the Mood for Love (2000) by Nick R — 17 Jan 2013
Every once in a while you come across a movie like In the Mood for Love: quiet, understated, sumptuous, heartbreaking. It's a movie about noticing the smaller details and staying late after everyone else has left.
The two couples navigate heartbreak and fidelity in a claustrophobic city where there's a tangible sense of emptiness, despite having people seemingly around every corner. In fact, their environment almost takes on a life of its own, thanks to the brilliant and lush cinematography.
It's not a feel-good film by any measure, but it's an understated gem worth watching.
