Review of In the Mood for Love (2000) by Paul P — 03 Feb 2013
The entire film is like floating on this beautiful hypnotic cloud. Wong Kar-Wai's film is completely original and for some the story will be too simple and the rest of it will be boring. Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Maggie Cheung are extraordinary and the scenes they share together are so palpable with passion, longing and sexual tension.
The film focuses more on the fleeting moments between the two where every glance represents repressed emotion trying to burst through. And by cutting out a majority of the moments they probably shared it gives the impression they are looking back years later on these times with regret and how they didn't express themselves to each other.
The fragmented narrative, the color schemes, Maggie Cheung's amazing dresses, the music, the noodles, mahjong, the editing all of it is just magnificent.
