Review of In the Loop (2009) by Nick B — 02 Apr 2012
A film filled with bumbling idiots, helpless characters stuck in Catch-22 situations, general embarassment, and some seriously impressive and creative swearing. In other words, it's very, very British. It's also hilarious, both in an Office-esque way (the 'are these people really that stupid?' factor) and in a surrealist, almost aggressive way, as evidenced by the line that may now be my favourite film quote ever:
"Just fucking do it! Otherwise you'll find yourself in some medieval war zone in the Caucasus with your arse in the air, trying to persuade a group of men in balaclavas that sustained sexual violence is not the fucking way forward!".
Funny throughout, enormously quotable, and in Malcolm Tucker it has a classic character to stand alongside Withnail. I should probably get around to watching The Thick of It now, shouldn't I? Maybe the biggest compliment I can pay to In the Loop is that it makes me feel like an idiot for not having watched it already.
