Review of In the Loop (2009) by Brandon H — 06 Mar 2010
I'm disappointed this movie didn't get more public attention. It was probably one of the most hilarious movies I've seen in a long time, just nonstop funny from beginning to end, and with ease. The American studios have long thrown together mediocre comedy after another ("I love you, Man", "Superbad," "The 40 Year Old Virgin", "Little Miss Sunshine" (yes, I said it, mediocre). Even one of my favorite comedies of the decade, "Sideways," doesn't stand up to this movie funny-wise. Very different kinds of movies, but you understand my point-- leave it to the Brits to finally come out with something fresh and witty from start to finish. There's so much ambition and pace in this movie it's impossible to turn away, even when the film does get just the slightest bit off (the character who smashes the fax machine never quite hits the right note to me; feels forced).
But get out there and see this one. If you're like me and have started to resign yourself to being satisfied with comedy crap like "Don't Mess With the Zohan," recharge your faith in comedy and watch "In the Loop." It was nominated for best adapted screenplay this year, and it lives up to that billing and more.
