Review of In the Loop (2009) by Neum D — 01 May 2010
Flawless political satire that is astonishingly well written (and semi-improvised) and very fast moving; there is immense re-watch value here. An unofficial big-screen spinoff of the BBC TV Series The Thick Of It and edited down from approx 5 hours of material, there's not a gram of fat and all the performances are excellent.
Peter Capaldi is superlative as he always is, comedian Chris Addison (in his first film role) is especially impressive, and of the American cast, it is not James Gandolfini but My Girl actress Anna Chlumsky who stands out.
Almost every line is quotable and there are laughs in every scene, but there is still room for pathos and character insight and the ending is very subtle and actually quite disturbing the more you think about it.
An assured, literate, brilliant film.
