Review of In the Line of Fire (1993) by Michael T — 25 Jul 2008
This film helped kill THE LAST ACTION HERO at the box office. By this point in the 1990s, movie producers were looking for the next Tarantino and the big-budget 1980s-style action movie was slowly dying off.
To top it off, Eastwood came along with this movie to show up the younger generation of action heroes. Eastwood delivers a very solid performance and is very funny as Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan who likes public transit and jazz music and "knows things about pigeons.
" John Malkovitch is an ex-CIA assasin planning to kill the president and he shows up in various different disguises throughout the film. Rene Russo & Dylan McDermott help fill out the cast. John Mahoney would soon be playing the dad on FRASIER.
Eastwood is a tad too old to be playing this role but they make that part of the joke and even make his unlikely relationship with Russo part of the joke. I loaned a VHS copy to friend who kept neglecting to return it for almost a year, and he is not easily impressed by action films.
