The thing that transports this movie into classic territory is Sidney Poitier's furious intensity. His character may be well-spoken and a sharp dresser, but he is also a dynamic force to be reckoned with.
You WILL call him Mr. Tibbs! Rod Steiger, as the laconic, wisecracking sheriff whose little world is shaken up by the arrival of this stranger, turns in a smart, sarcastic performance.
