Review of In the Heat of the Night (1967) by Lito B — 30 Aug 2008
This Best Picture winning film of 1967 still packs a serious punch. Sidney Poitier delivers a poweful performance as a sharp cop from Philadelphia who is first accused of murder while traveling in rural Mississippi and then recruited to help solve the case he was accused of.
Leading the investigation is a prejudiced Southern cop played wonderfully by Rod Steiger, who won Best Actor for his performance. This is a solid thriller, but overall not one of the greater Best Picture winners.
The opening, titular song by Ray Charles is awesome as is the jazzy score.
