Enquanto alguns filmes como "Preciosa" e "Crash" tentam fazer dos negros pobres coitados - daí o espectador sente pena, fica triste e 'tá tudo bem -, "No Calor da Noite" evita o sentimentalismo barato ao tratar do racismo norte-americano.
Uma obra que não envelheceu e, possivelmente, deve ter causado grande comoção à época de lançamento, justificando o seu Oscar de melhor filme - ainda que esteja longe de ser marcante. O grande mérito, de fato, é a atuação de Sidney Poitier: sempre sóbrio e, como disse anteriormente, sem se fazer de 'coitado'.
