Review of In the Heat of the Night (1967) by Markus S — 17 Dec 2009
Probably one of my best all time films. Capturing the sweaty, smouldering underbelly of 1960s southern American racism over a period of a day or so has been executed almost flawlessly. The cast are outstanding, delivering raw, energetic performances throughout, along with some truely 'jewel-in-the-crown' film scenes rarely bettered. For example the moment Mr Tibbs (SP) is introduced to the Police Chief (RS)when entering the dingy cramped station office (eye candy)! or the moment the 'white racist dignatory' slaps Mr Virgil Tibb's face followed by an instantaneous slap back! The look on the accompanying Police Chief's face!!
An interesting question has always remained with me about this flick - is the Police Chief racist? I've never been able to make up my mind....
