Review of In the Heat of the Night (1967) by Sarfaraz A — 08 Jan 2013
In the Heat of the Night mystery film directed by Norman Jewison. Starring Sidney Poitier, and Rod Steiger. Based on the novel of the same name by John Ball. Film won five Oscar awards including Best Picture. Film was followed by two sequels 'They Call Me MISTER Tibbs - The Organization'.
Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) a black police detective gets off a train in a small town in Mississippi, firstly he is suspected of the murder and upon verification that he is the police detective, he becomes involved in a murder investigation, at the same time suffering harsh racist behaviors, abuses, and beatings from White-Community of the town. Slowly he grows respectable friendship with White Police Chief Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger).
Very dramatic film, something that gives us an insightful view of the treatment of the black community in racist white-supremacy towns in the US. Sidney Poitier's performance is energizing, he talks mildly while being simmered. Rod Steiger steals the show with his fabulous acting.
