Review of In the Heart of the Sea (2015) by João P — 12 Dec 2015
In the Heart of the Sea is the latest Ron Howard film and in one word, it is disappointing. The film does not deliver what it promises, instead of showing us a face-off between Man and Nature, it wastes its runtime in a survival story that has been done before, and has been done better.
However, the film clearly had potential, and it is noticeable in various shots and scenes throughout the film. The CGI looks great on the wales, they feel natural and powerful, yet they don't feel very menacing.
The film's main issue is that it focuses too much on the shipwreck aspect of the story, instead of the opposition between the crew and the whale and between the captain and the first officer and tries to keep you invested in characters that you do not feel any empathy with.
A letdown by a great director.
