Review of In the Heart of the Sea (2015) by Junelkean — 08 Jul 2017
In the Heart of the Sea tells the tale of the wailing ship called the Essex and the true story that inspired Herman Melville to write the novel, "Moby Dick". But the movie is more about the survival of the fittest of our characters as they are attacked by the enormous whale, leaving them adrift in the ocean, stuck for months.
One of the biggest advantages of this film is the talented cast involved. We have Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Benjamin Walker and Tom Holland playing as the crewmen, but their characterizations are little thin to make them the big selling points of the movie. They are just expendable bodies, the CGI ocean can drift and play with.
The movie takes a long time to get engaging, and it’s not until the second half, where it picks up and starts getting interesting. There are some enthralling action sequences involving Moby Dick, and a 19th century vibe by using lighting choices which feels seamlessly believable.
VERDICT: In the Heart of the Sea floats, but sinks deeply.
