I'm a big fan of the James Lee Burke so I both looked forward to this and dreaded it. I was also suprised that this story was chosen as it contains supernatural elements which are not common with all of the other novels in this series.

I initially was horrified that Tommy Lee Jones was going to play the lead but his world weary cynical delivery demonstrated an understanding of the alcoholic borderline sociapath of the books but he did lack a certain physicality I expected.

He was excellently supported by Goodman, Sarsgaard and MacDonald in particular. Where the film fell down was the lack of depth which the novel was able to provide and a lack of atomosphere which also all of Burkes novels are able to convey effortlessly.

It didn't succeed as well as Tom Selleck did with the Jesse Stone books...
