Review of In the Cut (2003) by David K — 27 Nov 2007
Disturbing but an excellent murder mystery. There was quite a lot of sexual perversion/abuse, which gave the film a potent distaste for me, but I could not get past the empathy for the main women characters who desired more from men, who desired to dream and have a successful life and yet, were treated badly from the beginning and kept falling into sexual traps with abusive and psycho men.
ALL the men in the film were sexually perverted and creepy in one way or another, so you couldn't guess who the killer was. It was a perpetual guessing game, wading through perverse imagery, which I suppose could have been worse, but was negative enough.
Dream scenes correlated well with the rising turmoil of the film, starting out to contrast the negativity in the film in an eery way and continuing to become perverted along with the rest of the film.
There was some good music production to add to the creepiness of the film. In the end, there was still no real hope for the main character. All in all, regrettably a well made film but I won't be seeing it again.
