Review of In Search of a Midnight Kiss (2007) by Linda H — 03 Sep 2008
The script is a little uneven, but it's really very lovely. The black-and-white photography looks spectacular, like nothing you'll have seen in quite some time. Beautiful high-contrast B/W on faces, which specifically brings out blotches and freckles and undereye circles and everything else you'll usually see blurred out. Lots of really well-composed shots, great angles, terrific exploration of architecture. Wonderful music, including a bunch of Shearwater/Okkervil River stuff, for those who like that sort of thing.
Absolutely worth seeing for anyone who likes a sweet romantic movie. Not perfect, but heartfelt and genuine, and a beautiful love letter to L.A., of a type much more frequently offered to New York. Scoot McNairy (sigh, I know) is very charismatic and natural. It's not groundbreaking, but I liked it.
