Review of In Harm's Way (1965) by Tom%20 P — 17 Mar 2018
I'm a huge military history buff, did 25 years of Army active duty. Love good war movies, and there are not so many. The story is historically accurate, as long as you allow them to com\bine several battles into one.
A mixture of Guadalcanal in '42 and Leyte Gulf in '44. But that's poetic license. superb photography and score. easily my favorite john wayne movie . Everyone is good in this, so Preminger deserves great credit.
I've watched it a dozen times. like "the godfather" and a few others, I never tire of it. as the story shows, a light cruiser did get out of pearl harbor. it was the "Detroit", and my uncle was on it, he was still one when she was sunk by two Japanese destroyers early in '42.
and ironically he was sunk again on the "st. lo", and that is the leyte gulf battle also depicted in this movie. But that has nothing to do with my affection for this movie. it is just very well done.
