Review of In Good Company (2000) by James S — 27 Oct 2008
On the face of it In Good Company looks like one of those sentimental comedies that you used to expect to find Steve Martin starring in. Upon closer inspection though the film delivers a lot more than expected and turns out to be a rather astute and revealing movie regarding two times in the life of the male species.
Dennis Quaid and Topher Grace are both good in their roles as the older family man facing the young upstart, both of them dealing with the issues of expectation, regret and the struggles that their respective times in life bring.
The script is good and actually funny in parts. Scarlett Johannsen gives an admirable supporting performance, though far from her best and the film manages to steer away from the obvious happy ending even if the end does push the slush factor a little too far.
Overall though, In Good Company is a good movie that surprises with it's charm in an almost effortless fashion.
