Review of In Bruges (2008) by Corey B — 01 Feb 2012
A fun, witty script by McDonagh, mixed with great performances (where has this Colin Farrell been hiding?) leads to a wonderful feature debut for McDonagh.
It's funny and sad, often in the exact same moment. It's exhilarating, yet restrained. Realistic, yet dreamlike. It's a movie filled with contradictions, but instead of repelling each other and creating a tonally dissonant movie, this is a case of opposites attracting. You're never sure which side of the spectrum a certain scene is going to result in, and that level of unpredictability works to create a movie that feels alive in every frame.
