Review of In Bruges (2008) by Paul B — 31 Oct 2013
In continuing my recent trend of re-watching fondly remembered movies so I can rate them here led to last nights viewing of In Bruges. A darkly comic tale of two hit men sent to the Belgium city to hide out whilst the dust settles on a hit that went wrong.
Not knowing why they have been sent so far away, and having to share a room for up to two weeks whilst waiting for further instructions from their boss Harry, a superb Ralph Fiennes, the true reason for their relocation slowly unravels.
The dialogue is superb, brilliantly funny often & gut-wrenchingly poignant & emotional when needed. Colin Farrell puts in a truly remarkable performance opposite yet another brilliant turn from Brendon Gleeson.
This film literally has it all, wonderful set-pieces, two fully rounded characters you actually care about, great scenery and a brutal undercurrent of dark comedy. Its only downside is the inevitable conclusion that springs no surprises but works well just the same.
