Review of In & Out (1997) by Char. J — 15 Jan 2009
This is an enjoyable film, that I remember being reviewed positively at the time of its release, but didn't see until the other night on TV. Plenty of nice light comedy moments throughout, but the film probably over-does the Barbra Streisand cliches a bit. The ending, where it all gets a bit over-serious and starts laying on its "message" with a trowel, isn't the film's finest 15 minutes.
Kevin Kline's performance is somewhat toned down from his one in A Fish Called Wanda, but then most other performances would be!Joan Cusack is VERY good as his prospective bride. Tom Selleck is clearly enjoying himself. Interesting to see "Clare" from Six Feet Under (Lauren Ambrose)tucked away in a bit parts as one of the pupils in what was probably one of her first screen roles.
