Review of In & Out (1997) by Michaela K — 06 Dec 2017
For all its good intentions, good humor, and good performances (especially Kline, whose energy lifts everything around him), the movie is too shallow, too safe, and ultimately too cliché. Queerness here is stripped of all romance and sexuality, instead being reduced to a series of stereotypes, so that by the time the happy resolution comes-a gay Spartacus bit that works better on paper than as the film's actual climax-the film has engaged in too much homophobia to simply wash away and ignore.
