Review of In a World... (2013) by Valentina K — 31 Aug 2013
In a World... is too cute at times. Moreover, there are moment where it lags and I lost interest in the main conflict in the movie, whether the protagonist will make it in the competitive voice over industry. However, much of the movie provides interesting twists and insights into relationships and Lake Bell and Dimitri Martin are both charming and do well holding that fine line between adventurousness and awkwardness. Overall it is a wonderful first effort with a few flaws.
The cruelness with which the head of a studio addresses Carol was not only unnecessary, but it was also completely out of place and out of the blue. Perhaps it was based on a real discussion Ms. Blue had with a studio head about her voice over work. But it didn't work in the film and tarnished the ending.
Rating: see it as a matinee.
Peace,.
