Review of In a Better World (2010) by Jonathan P — 11 Mar 2013
Danish movie telling us the story of a family. Anton is a doctor doing tours in Africa, his wife and kids live in Denmark, he is separated from his wife since he was unfaithful to her. Elias is their first born a good natured kid bullied at school, but then he befriends a new arrival, a grieving and very troubled Christian, a young man crippled by sorrow and guilt. The movie follows the endeavours of Elias in Denmark and his father abroad when both are faced against senseless violence.
What I like most about this movie is the lack of stereotypes, each character is well built and has a defined personality that it forcibly evolves with each passing minute. There are no moral absolutes, no moral lines, just the story of a family trying to survive tough times. It also gives an interesting insight into the harrowing situation of Africa, the refugees, the soldiers, the scarcity of resources, the brutality of war...
This is a piece of good European cinema, with believable performances and a meaningful and entertaining plot.
