Review of In a Bedroom (2012) by John S — 05 Feb 2010
2001 was a year where 1, possibly 2 movies were released that I would feel comfortable calling â??masterpieces,â?? and I think â??In The Bedroomâ?? is one of them. Director Todd Field has such an uncanny ability to create a distinct and evocative mood in the most suburban of places, first here, then later with â??Little Children.
â?? Itâ??s a feel, rhythm, and look unique to his films, and is so crucial in developing these characters. Sissy â??oh my godâ?? Spacek and Tom Wilkinson deliver roles that are literally the best Iâ??ve ever seen from either.
It may seem like a flat role when youâ??re required to cry all the time, but there is such depth created in the most miniscule scenes. Marisa Tomei rounds out the immaculate cast in a role perfectly tailored to her, a role that requires much, a role that is sympathetic and yet dangerous.
Throughout the movie there are so many ethical and moral dilemmas that are raised and questioned, and yet it never feels sappy or forced. In fact, this movie had me on the edge of my seat more than once.
Going into it with literally no expectations nor knowledge of the plot (the title may imply other meanings. Trust me â?? they are wrong), but I loved it all the more for that. It kept me interested, focused, and thinking.
When you see movies like this and find out that they won zero Oscars, you canâ??t help but wonder if people even WATCHED the same film!
