Review of Import/Export (2007) by Mo T — 10 Mar 2008
This Austrian film pictures some obvious truths about life, yet nothing especially surprizing, like eg.that Eastern European ladies do not have an easy time in Western Europe, especially, or rather- only the ones outside the EU... that people put in a sitatuon where they are "supposed"to be sexy and seductive are rather ridiculous (see: the amount of sex toys, beads, lace, "sexy" lingerie) . It also reveals the ridiculous side of women's sexuality, like who could ever find it attractive to watch a naked girl in the most exposed poition obtainable by human skill - the "liver-shot" position or the knee-elbow position? The less people try the more sexy they are (see: blazee Austrian 20-something guy Pau (Paul Hofmann)l, and his physique- who instead of having sex, prefers to work out). I think that's one of the truths this film reveals.
There is also something very simillar between the character of Paul and the author or this review: the lack of interest for cheap sex at any price at any situation.
Also the construction of the plot is pretty well-thought and interesting: you start to realise that Paul's mother is a potential type of person young Olga might try to be, or rather end-up as, we hope not! (although I see nothing wrong with the mother's character and her family, maybe except her husband): also from Eastern Europe, as we learn from Paul's resemblences of speaking the Czech language, also married to just-any Austrian guy, even the ugliest, for the sole purpose of a legitimate residence in Austria, speaking of who, the husband Michael is also from Southern or Eastern Europe, etc. etc.
Only the easthetics of Olga, who wins sympathy in the viewer, is smart and determined, despite of wearing black spandex shorts during winter and white stiletto-hell boots of plastic in the same season of the year, her baby (so cute), and Paul.
